The Olympics

The Olympics are one of the only truly international activities that creates a sense of a 'world community.' For this reason, it has been used for political statements (Jesse Owens in 1936, the Moscow boycott) and for national pride. Yet, the reputation of the Olympics has become tarnished, through athletes violating the rules and cheating their way to the top.

Drug Use at the Olympics:

During the 1976 Olympic games, the East German women's swim team dominated the competition. It was later revealed that the team had taken anabolic steroids, a plan sponsored by the East German government.
